Colorado Durango Teen Court - Durango, CO Durango Teen Court Organizes Luncheon with Colorado Supreme Court During Law Day on May 1, 2006. The Durango Teen Court will be hosting a luncheon with Justices from the Colorado Supreme Court. Before lunch, the justices will hear two cases in the school based teen court program. A reception will follow in the school library. In total, 425 students from around the Durango area will be in attendance. Florida The teen court program located in Clay County Florida will soon move into their newly restored courthouse which was built in 1890. The teen court program received a restoration grant of 1.2 million dollars. Upon receipt of the grant monies they were required to renovate the courthouse. The courthouse will be used for ceremonies, youth court hearings, and a few select civil trials. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for March 30, 2006. Illinois McDonough County Teen Court - Macomb, IL A grant applied for by Teen Court volunteers in November was awarded to the group in the amount of $750 for their participation in a program entitled "Picture This." The money, which was awarded by the Illinois Violence Authority, was spent on digital cameras for the teens to take pictures throughout McDonough County that they feel are positive influences on people their age. Pictures will also be taken during the National Youth Service Day weekend, April 21 through April 23 at the Teen Court Community Garden Work Day. The pictures will be enlarged and will appear on a float during the annual Heritage Days parade. Click here to read the full story. Kentucky Kentucky Hosts 9th Annual Youth Court Conference The 9th Annual Kentucky Teen Court Conference convened at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky on February 1, 2006. The theme for this year’s event was “Tomorrow’s Leaders Making a Difference”. Interactive breakout sessions were conducted on topics related to creative sentencing and youth leadership. Jim Adams, President of Toastmasters of the Bluegrass discussed important ways that youth court volunteers can hone their skills to make their presentations and speeches more effective. Massachusetts The New Bedford Prevention Partnership recently received an award of $10,000 from the New Bedford Day Nursery. The partnership has been working with youth for almost 10 years. The partnership has been instrumental in a variety of ways, including the implementation of the SMILES program (Southcoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning Education and Success) that provides mentoring for young people as well as members of the New Bedford Youth Court. Livingston County Youth Court - Geneseo, NY Hillside Children's Center (HCC) Livingston County Youth Court was recently recognized by New York State Governor George E. Pataki. A certificate signed by Pataki citing the court's service to the community and contributions to the juvenile justice system was presented to HCC Youth Court Coordinator Dottie O'Neil-Marble during the Association of New York State Youth Courts' quarterly meeting. North Carolina Onslow County Teen Court - Jacksonville, NC The Onslow County Teen Court was pleased to welcome U.S. Representative Walter Jones to Jacksonville for their teen court session on January 19, 2006. Tennessee Tennessee Youth Court Program Youth Court Day on the Hill - offers a chance for youth involved in youth/teen/peer courts in Tennessee to visit Nashville, observe legislative committees, and visit with state legislators on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 |
